In terms of a GB start, (and really any start for that matter) I always have 2 priorities: kill the pirates and take the trade points.

Would say read one or two of those and you should trounce the AI. There are a LOT of great guides out there that go into the importance of field tactics as well as the mechanics that are important to know about. I can’t pick a favorite but I think I definitely put more hours into it than any other game on my computer. So I’m one of the few I’ve found who absolutely loved Empire.
